How it works...
Connect your Garmin to your PC, go to MountainBikeColorado.com, find a singletrack route you like, export the route to your device through the "Download Ride" button. Once you have reached the trailhead, activate the ride now stored on your GPS. A track will show up with an arrow representing your competition! Either navigate using the track view or use the compass screen, which I prefer.
Ride hard and fast, see if you can beat the "virtual" rider.
